Footwear Construction



Footwear construction; floor surface; activity level; contaminants; employee. This refers to the fact that the shoe has been tested and passed the American National Standard Institute criteria for protective toe caps on footwear. The I75 refers to impact. A men's shoe must maintain a minimum clearance of 16/32 when an object weighing 50 pounds is dropped with a height of 18" creating an impact of 75 pounds. A woman's shoe must maintain a minimum clearance of 15/32 when an object weighting 50 pounds is dropped from a height of 18" creating an impact of 75 pounds. The C75 refers to compression. A shoe must maintain the same clearance while being compressed by a minimum of 2500 pounds.
Upper The entire fabric or leather portion of a shoe from the sole up.
Vamp The part of a boot or shoe upper covering the front part of the foot.

Lining Material Lining materials are generally made of either nylon or polyester. Nylon linings have good abrasion resistance, but tend to be warmer. Polyester linings are cooler, but do not have good abrasion resistance.
Medial Support Support provided along the inside, or arch side, of the shoe.
Metatarsal Protection There are three different classifications for metatarsal ratings, which reflect measurements of foot-pounds: Mt75, Mt50 and Mt30.
Midsole The cushioning materials between the insole and outsole of the shoe.
Outsole The part of the shoe that comes into constant contact with the ground and is responsible for providing traction.
Ozone-resistant The ability of a material to resist cracking.
PU Polyurethane.
Puncture resistant Testing for puncture resistant footwear is accomplished by applying a steel test pin to the protective device used in the shoe. The protective device must withstand a minimum force of not less than 270 pounds when applied to the pin. Footwear meeting standards for puncture resistance may bear a label


Hiker: Top line usually finishes just above the ankle, as the Chukka. The closure system is lace-up. The styling is usually more outdoor oriented than a Chukka.

Leather Technical Facts Water-resistant: describes leather that has been tanned to resist moisture penetration, allowing water and other liquids to run off in order to keep the foot dry.
Waterproof: describes leather than has been tanned and treated so that water cannot penetrate and the foot is kept dry under all conditions.

Full Grain: refers to the outermost layer of layer whose grain has not been corrected or reduced. This is the highest quality leather available.

Barnyard Acid-Resistant: Specially treated for the unique elements associated with farms including manure, urine, fertilizers and herbicides.

Polishable: refers to leather than can be polished, is easily cleaned and has a tight surface to reduce absorption.

Stain-resistant: Leather that has been specially tanned and treated to reduce absorption and resist stains.
